A VoIP call starts breaking-up just as someone else begins a large cloud backup. A video meeting freezes while the rest of the office carries on browsing. When that happens, the instinct is often to blame the broadband connection – but the real problem may be how your network is handling competing traffic.

Quality of Service, usually shortened to QoS, gives delay-sensitive traffic such as voice and video priority when a network becomes busy. It can make a significant difference to call quality, but it is not a magic speed boost, and it cannot fix every connectivity problem.

What Is Quality of Service (QoS)?

Quality of Service is a set of network-management techniques used to classify and prioritise traffic. Instead of treating every packet the same, a configured network can give time-sensitive applications preferential treatment when several services compete for limited capacity.

That matters because not all traffic reacts to delay in the same way. A software update can take a few seconds longer without anyone noticing. A live phone call cannot. If voice packets arrive late, out of order or not at all, users hear gaps, distortion or delays.

The most important limitation is that QoS does not create extra bandwidth. It manages the bandwidth you already have. If the connection is fundamentally too small for the workload, prioritisation may protect voice traffic while other applications slow down, but it will not remove the capacity problem.

Which Business Traffic Should Get Priority?

Start with the applications that genuinely matter when the network is congested.

Real-Time Voice and Video

VoIP telephone systems, Microsoft Teams calls and video conferencing are sensitive to latency, jitter and packet loss. These applications usually benefit most from QoS because delayed packets cannot simply wait without affecting the conversation.

Business-Critical Cloud Applications

CRM platforms, remote desktops and line-of-business applications may deserve a higher priority than background activity, although they are usually less delay-sensitive than live voice. The priority should reflect what happens if the application slows down.

Bulk And Background Traffic

Large downloads, software updates, cloud backups and non-essential streaming can normally tolerate delay. These are obvious candidates to slow down first when capacity is tight.

How QoS Works In Practice

QoS normally uses several mechanisms together. Traffic is classified, marked with a priority value, placed into an appropriate queue, and then scheduled according to the policy configured on routers, firewalls or switches.

Differentiated Services Code Point, or DSCP, is commonly used to mark traffic. Microsoft recommends DSCP-based QoS for Teams and uses different markings for audio, video and screen sharing. Its current guidance assigns voice traffic to Expedited Forwarding (EF) and video to AF41. Microsoft’s Teams QoS guidance also makes clear that endpoint and internal network configuration need to work together.

Those markings are not a guarantee that every network on the public internet will honour the same priority. QoS is most predictable on infrastructure you control or on a managed provider network with agreed service classes.

Latency, Jitter and Packet Loss

Before changing policies, measure the network. Latency is delay, jitter is variation in that delay, and packet loss occurs when data does not reach its destination. Microsoft notes that congestion can cause voice to break up, video to freeze and packets to arrive late or out of sequence.

Does QoS Make Your Internet Faster?

No. QoS can make an important application feel more reliable because its packets move ahead of less urgent traffic during congestion, but it does not increase the download or upload rate supplied by your provider.

When Does a Business Actually Need QoS?

QoS is most useful when the business depends on delay-sensitive applications, the network experiences periods of congestion, and you control enough of the network to enforce a consistent policy.

It is worth serious consideration if customer calls degrade while backups or downloads are running, Teams meetings regularly struggle when the office is busy, or several locations share constrained WAN links.

Microsoft’s guidance is deliberately nuanced: a small business with few users may not need QoS but should consider it when users experience network delay. That is a better rule than assuming every SME must configure it.

When QoS Will Not Solve the Problem

QoS will not repair a failing broadband circuit, weak Wi-Fi coverage, damaged cabling, poor mobile reception or an overloaded firewall. It also cannot make a 20 Mbps upload behave like a 100 Mbps upload when every application genuinely needs capacity at the same time.

If the network has adequate capacity most of the day but short bursts of traffic damage voice or video, QoS can be a sensible fix. If the connection regularly runs close to its limit for long periods, more bandwidth is usually the cleaner long-term answer.

How To Implement QoS Safely

QoS can improve performance, but a poor configuration can starve legitimate traffic or create new bottlenecks. A controlled rollout is safer than applying generic settings across the whole network.

1. Baseline The Network

Record bandwidth utilisation, latency, jitter and packet loss during normal and peak periods. Identify whether the problem occurs on wired devices, Wi-Fi, one site or the whole organisation.

2. Identify Critical Applications

Prioritise genuine business needs rather than giving every cloud platform ‘high priority’. Too many high-priority applications simply recreate the original problem inside the priority queue.

3. Configure And Test

4. Monitor The Result

Compare performance with the baseline. Check whether call quality improves and whether lower-priority applications remain usable. Keep a record of the configuration so it can be adjusted or rolled back.

What About Multi-Site Networks And SD-WAN?

QoS becomes more complex when several offices and connectivity providers are involved. SD-WAN can apply application-aware policies and steer traffic across different links, but achievable performance still depends on the underlying connections.

Avoid treating MPLS, SD-WAN or QoS as interchangeable promises of guaranteed performance. An SLA is only as strong as the specific service and contract behind it.
